Here is the author’s note that follows “Borderline” in my book:
Author’s note: BORDERLINE
Whenever we Southerners talk about something being a little suspect or not quite up to par, we often say it’s “borderline.” It was fun to build this essay around that colloquial term.
The incident following Robin’s colonoscopy happened a number of years ago, and I wrote this piece shortly afterwards. In September 2005 the essay won second place in a White County Creative Writers’ contest calling for “A Lesson Learned from Life.” Four years later I updated the piece, submitted it to another WCCW contest sponsored by Central Arkansas Writers, and the essay won third place.
This year Robin and I have celebrated our fifty-third wedding anniversary, and I’m happy to say our life together is still “way more than borderline.”
